Surf Forecasts: Turning Numbers Into Perfect Sessions

Before You Hit the Beach

Check Multiple Sources – I don’t trust just one app. I’ll compare a few (Surfline, Magicseaweed, Windy, etc.) to see the consensus.

  • Swell height and period

  • Swell direction

  • Wind speed and direction

  • Tide times

One forecast might miss something the others catch.

Know Your Break – A 4ft @ 12s swell doesn’t surf the same everywhere. At my local beachie, it’s perfect. At a nearby reef, it might close out. Local knowledge turns numbers into real waves.

Out in the Line Up

Read the Ocean, Not Just the Screen – The forecast might call it 3–4ft, but the sets feel bigger or smaller. I stay flexible and surf what’s in front of me, not what the app promised.

Watch the Wind Shifts – Offshore mornings can switch to onshore quick. I’ll keep an eye on the horizon for that first ruffle across the water—it’s my signal to make the most of the session.

Respect the Tide – Some spots fire on the push, others on dead low. If the tide’s wrong, I’ll wait it out or paddle elsewhere.

After the Session

Compare Notes – I’ll check back: Did the waves line up with what the forecast said? Did the swell fill in faster or later than expected? That’s how I learn the quirks of my home break.

Track the Patterns – Over time, I notice trends—like how a west swell always seems to arrive a few hours early. These little insights sharpen my instincts.

What to Implement

  • Forecast screenshots (handy for comparing later)

  • Tide chart (not just for today, but the week ahead)

  • Patience (conditions don’t always match the screen)

  • Curiosity (keep learning how swells actually behave)

Mindset Matters

Forecasts Guide, Not Dictate – Apps give numbers, but the ocean gives truth.

Local Knowledge Beats Data – A surfer who knows their break will outsmart any algorithm.

Every Session Is a Lesson – Even when the forecast is “wrong,” the ocean is teaching me something new.

Forecasts are tools, not guarantees. The real magic comes from blending data with experience—reading the charts, checking the sky, and trusting your gut. That’s how you score the waves that others miss.
