General Frequently Asked Questions

Do you provide equipment or should I bring my own?

All equipment is provided. We use a combination of high quality NSP and SurfTech SofTop surfboards. They are made to be the safest high-performance surfboards available to beginning surfers. Those, along with Pro Tec safety fins and SPF 50 long sleeve rash guards ensure the best experience possible. We also have an extensive selection of epoxy NSP surfboards for intermediate to advanced surfers. You may bring your own surfboards to camp, just let us know in advance.

Is there a lifeguard at the beach you use?

All of our overnight camp instructors hold current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certifications including CPR for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid. One might even say that we over-qualify our team with this many lifeguards. We have an impeccable safety record and are very proud of it!

Where do other participants come from?

Our programs are made up of diverse groups of campers who come from all parts of the world. This opens the door for campers to learn about unique cultures and different backgrounds. The diversity found in our programs is unmatched. You will leave having found new friends from all over the world!

Do you have references available?

We would be happy to offer you the opportunity to speak with past participants in order to give you a personal reflection of their experience. Please contact our office for a list of references.

Should I have trip interruption insurance?

We highly recommend that camp insurance be purchased. We are not responsible for tuition refunds or expenses incurred for trip delays, cancellation, or illness. In the event that you must cancel at the last minute due to an unforeseen event, camp insurance can help protect your investment. We suggest a few different travel insurance companies that provide different levels of coverage, including COVID coverage.

My child isn’t the strongest swimmer, is Carolina Ocean Odyssey for them?

Since water activities are physically demanding, we do require that campers be able to swim 25 meters unassisted and be comfortable in water where they can’t touch the ground. Campers that are looking to build their water stamina in the ocean should consider our Kids Camps. These programs are specifically designed to improve kids’ comfort level in and around the ocean.

For Overnight Surf Camps, what kind of supervision is provided?

Our counselors provide 24-hour, same gender supervision for every camper. We will not tolerate disruptive or dangerous behavior, and every camper is made aware of this during orientation.

What happens if any camp rules are broken during Overnight Camps?

We are extremely conscientious about upholding our standards of safety and conduct for both our staff and our students. On the first night of our overnight summer camps, our rules are clearly presented to our students. Students and parents appreciate that our rules are fair, well understood, and enforced without exception.

Do I need to get a physical or vaccinations prior to arrival at camp?

While we do not require a physical, you will need to complete a medical history form, which is included in your registration materials. Campers are required to have an up-to-date tetanus booster. If you elect not to receive tetanus boosters for personal reasons, please note this on your medical history form.

Do you offer financial aid?

Our scholarship program allows participants from all backgrounds to enjoy WB Surf Camp adventures. Please click hereto learn more about our financial aid packages.

My child has special needs. Can my child attend camp?

Each year, many youth with special needs are able to participate in our camp programs.  In accordance to our safety standards, campers must be able to function in our required youth-to-adult instructional ratio (program dependent) in the constraints of the dynamic ocean environment.  Special needs may include a range of physical, medical, developmental, dietary, behavioral, or communicative abilities.  It is our hope to be able to serve all campers wishing to attend camp.  Providing a safe and positive experience to all campers is of utmost importance to us.  We reserve the right to make decisions of participation based on the extent of the camper’s needs and our ability to meet those needs in the camp setting, as well as other factors as deemed appropriate.  We are concerned about the health and safety of all campers, and we want to ensure we have appropriate professional and medical services to meet needs.  Please contact the Program Coordinator at 910-256-7873 to discuss this camp program and the nature of your child’s needs.
