WB Surf Camp’s Top Surf Spots!

What is your favorite surf spot? Where is the BEST place you’ve ever surfed? What beaches does your camp go to?  As surf instructors and surf travel guides, we get asked these questions all the time. If we had a nickel for every time we asked these questions, we’d have A LOT of nickels!

As a company, we thrive on showing people the absolute best of the surfing lifestyle. From how to surf to where to surf…it is our mission to educate. When good waves come, these places rival any surfing destination on the planet.

Where are the spots that WB Surf Camp likes the most? Here’s a quick list :

Topsail Island, NC

They don’t call it Surf City for nothing! Topsail Island in North Carolina is an area of exposed beach and jetty breaks that has fairly consistent surf and can work at any time of the year. Most offshore winds blow from the northwest. Groundswells and windswells are equally likely and the ideal swell angle is from the southeast. The beach breaks offer lefts and rights. The quality of the surf isn’t affected by the tide too much, though a rising, lower to mid tide is the best. Even when there are waves, it’s not likely to be crowded. Our Teen Overnight Camps call this beach home as it is only a short walk through a private access to endless waves and a gorgeous white sand beach to make the ultimate surf experience! source:surf-forecast.com

Wrightsville Beach, NC

Surf culture is alive and well in our namesake hometown.  It’s no wonder that National Geographic magazine recently named Wrightsville Beach one of the world’s premier surf towns. If you’re a longboarder, head north up N. Lumina Avenue until you reach
the Northern tip of the island. The consistent breaks found along this stretch of Wrightsville make it a longboarding favorite. The surf gets a little heavier as you go south, so if you’re up for a challenge or are looking for the big waves, head down to C- Street or keep going to Crystal Pier at the South end. You really can’t lose with all the sandbars and surf breaks offered.  Facing southeast into the Atlantic, and tucked behind the Outer Banks, Wrightsville’s soft, sandy beaches are the perfect venue for beginners to advanced surfers and perfectly warm in the summer. Playa Grande, Costa Rica

Probably one of the most consistent spots in Costa Rica , Playa Grande is a quality beachbreak, especially on a good south swell.  A prime surf spot full of A-frames, tube rides, fast waves, playful lefts and rights, and of course, warm water, this is the closest surfing beach to Liberia International Airport (LIR). If you can’t find waves anywhere else, Playa Grande will have something to ride, and it’s especially good when a south swell combines with winter-time offshore winds. During mid-tide, around 3 hours before and up to 3 hours after high tide, is the best time to score this paradise. Check out our Adult Costa Rica Surf/Yoga retreat. source:playagrandesurfshop.com

Tortola, British Virgin Islands

Beautiful bays, warm water, and white-sand beaches litter Tortola. There are three main breaks here: Apple Bay, a fairly consistent reef break that resembles Lower Trestles; Josiah’s Bay, a soft beginner-friendly beachbreak; and Cane Garden Bay, an inconsistent (though at times world-class) right point. November to March is the best season to visit. That’s when large winter low-pressure systems push off the United States’ eastern seaboard and into the Atlantic, sending groomed open ocean groundswell to the north facing shores of the Caribbean. Tortola can serve up long rippable rights, heaving wedges, and mellow rollers. This is a true surf paradise everyone should experience at least once.
