Welcome Back! – John Holsten
We would like to take a moment to welcome back John Holsten as our North Carolina Teen Overnight Unit Leader for the 2020 season! John has been with us for several years and while any camper from his time with us will know who he is, we wanted to take this time to introduce him to our new campers.
Where are you from?
Wilson, NC
How did you get into surfing?
I got into surfing through swimming. My friend’s dad surfed and he took us out to pine knolls shore where he told me, “you already have a good stroke, so all you gotta do now is stand up.”
What brought you to Wilmington?
I came to Wilmington because of school, I just love the town.
What are you studying?
I am studying Psychology with a minor in Neuroscience [at UNC Wilmington], so I can become a researcher and teacher.
How long have you been at WB Surf Camp?
This is my 4th year coming back to WB Surf Camp.*
*John started in 2017 as a surf instructor for Teen Overnight Camp, and received the counselor of the year award. He became Unit Leader for this team in 2019.
What keeps bringing you back?
The kids that share the stoke in the water, extraordinary staff you get to meet, and beautiful ocean only steps from the Shack. (The Shack is what our instructors call our facility in North Topsail.)
What are you looking forward to this summer with camp?
This summer I hope to meet more unique kids and counselors and see everyone smile as they catch some waves!
We are stoked to have John back at the head of our residential team. He has been a fantastic leader and we are excited for everything he brings to the program!
