Learn to Surf or Paddleboard at Figure Eight Island

Just north of Wrightsville Beach, Figure Eight Island, NC is a private, exclusive, oceanfront community. It’s a favorite hideaway for stars and political figures that vacation in one of the 441 homes on the island. You won’t find any commercial enterprises here. The only development includes a yacht club, a marina, tennis courts, and a boat ramp.

If flying in, Figure Eight is only 16 miles away from the Wilmington International Airport (ILM). It is accessible only by a guarded bridge across the Intracoastal Waterway. It is the perfect escape from reality but near enough to Wilmington that you have access to everything you need as far as shopping and dining are concerned.

This distinctive 1,300 acre island features over five miles of unspoiled white sandy beach. This uncrowded, beautiful stretch of beach is perfect for the vacationer who seeks pure peace and quiet. It’s a great beach to just relax with a good book and a big glass of sweet tea. Make sure you look up from your book every now and then because there’s a good chance you’ll witness Atlantic bottlenose dolphins cruising by. With the natural state of this island, you’ll also see numerous species of shore birds such as pelicans diving into the water after their lunch. You and your family will have a whole stretch of beach to yourselves so there is plenty of space for football, paddle ball, bocci ball or skim-boarding. When’s the last time you flew a kite?

Figure Eight is a great place to turn the TV’s off, forget about the internet, and get active. Surfing, Stand Up Paddle boarding, kayaking, kite-surfing and sailing are all popular water sports to try while on vacation. There are more surf breaks here than there are surfers so you’ll catch all the waves you want with no crowds.

You’ve got all day to catch fish from the shore and grill out with the family. If you don’t have much luck with the fishing though, there are great restaurants just a few miles away in the Porter’s Neck area. Try Kiva Grill and Two Guys Grill, some of Surf Camps favorites.

Figure Eight Island is just one of the many pristine beaches of Southeastern North Carolina, which is ranked among the top 12 vacation spots in North America. The clear warm water averages in the low 80’s throughout the summer months, making it an ideal location in which to learn the sport of surfing or stand up paddle boarding though our world renown Carolina Surf School!
