Packing for a Surf Trip: The Ultimate Checklist

There’s nothing worse than showing up to a dream surf destination and realizing you forgot something crucial—whether it’s fins, wax, or the right board for the conditions. Over years of going on surf trips, I’ve fine-tuned my packing process to make sure every trip runs smoothly. Here’s the ultimate checklist to keep you dialed in and ready for any surf adventure.

Essential Gear

  1. Surfboards (2-3 options) – Your board selection depends on the waves you’ll be surfing. If it’s a smaller, mushier wave, a mid-length can be a great option. Personally, I like to travel for bigger waves, so I bring a board that works in small to head-high surf, plus a step-up for heavier waves. For longer trips, I bring an extra everyday board in case one snaps.
  2. Boardbag – A solid, padded boardbag protects your gear from airline mishaps. I prefer a bag that’s light but offers a lot of storage while being sturdy and stable. The DirtBag 2.0 is one of the toughest bags on the market.
  3. Leashes – Always pack at least two. Leashes snap, and losing one mid-trip is a nightmare.
  4. Fins – A spare set is key. If you ride multiple boards, make sure you have compatible fins for each setup.
  5. Wax & Comb – Match your wax to the water temp of your destination.
  6. Ding Repair Kit – Small dings happen, and quick fixes keep you in the water.
  7. Towel – A microfiber towel saves space and dries quickly.
  8. Sun Protection – High-SPF reef-safe sunscreen, zinc, a hat, and UV-protective surf shirts/rash guards.
  9. Wetsuit (if needed) – Check water temps ahead of time and bring the right thickness.

Travel Essentials

  1. Passport & Travel Docs – Keep digital and physical copies.
  2. Cash & Cards – Some surf spots are cash-only, so bring small bills.
  3. First Aid Kit – Include reef-safe antiseptic, bandages, pain relievers, and swimmer’s ear drops.
  4. Electronics – Phone, charger, power bank, and a travel adapter.
  5. Dry Bag – Keeps valuables safe on boat trips and rainy days.
  6. Water Bottle – Stay hydrated, especially in remote surf zones.

Pro Tips & Must-Have Extras

  1. Headwrap – This is one of my must-have items. It blocks sand from blowing into your face, provides cooling and shade when wrapped around your head, and is super portable. You can also use it as a waist wrap, back support, or even as a towel in a pinch.
  2. Snacks & Energy Boosts – I always bring Gu Energy packets—they taste great and provide a quick caffeine boost when needed.
  3. Protecting Your Boards – Pack clothes around the nose and tail of your boards and run towels along the rails. This not only keeps your boards safe but also saves space by reducing the need for an extra checked bag.
  4. Filming Gear – A GoPro with a mouth mount is my go-to for capturing POV shots while riding waves.
  5. Airport Strategy – Always be relaxed and friendly at the airport. A lot of people get stressed, but I’ve found that if you’re friendly and smile, airlines will treat you better and the whole process becomes smoother.

Having a dialed-in packing list makes your surf trip way more enjoyable and stress-free. The goal is to maximize time in the water while minimizing hiccups. Got any must-pack items I missed? Drop them in the comments!
