Oak Island NC - Surfing Lessons

Oak Island is located approximately 30 miles south of Wilmington, NC. If you are coming by boat and need more precise directions, Oak Island is located at 33:54:47.754 North and 78:06:59.760 West! This 12.6-mile long island offers breath-taking views from the lighthouse on Caswell Beach to Bald Head Island. When you stand on the beach at Oak Island and gaze out over the Atlantic Ocean, you are actually facing the Bahamas, Florida, and Cuba. The island averages about one mile across, so you are never very far from water- the Atlantic to your east and the Intracoastal Waterway to your west. With all of the waterways, this is the perfect place to rent a kayak and go explore.
Oak Island has a complex coastal ecosystem, typical of southeastern North Carolina beaches, with areas of salt marsh, freshwater wetlands, maritime forests, and miles of beach strand. The island hosts a variety of flora and fauna, including seasonal visits from Green, Loggerhead, and Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles. Female turtles return to the beach where they once hatched each year to build their own nest in the sand dunes. The Town of Oak Island along with the Army Corps of Engineers recently completed a Sea Turtle Restoration Project to restore sea turtle habitat that had been lost to erosion. Saving the world’s sea turtles is one of the many reasons that we need to protect the sand dunes.
For all the history buffs, make sure you visit Fort Caswell on the east end of the island. The Fort was built in 1836 to guard the mouth of the Cape Fear River and protect the port city of Wilmington during the Civil War. Fort Caswell is now owned and operated by the North Carolina Baptist Assembly.
The charming town of Southport is a short seven mile drive away and is a great place to spend the afternoon wandering from shop to shop. The Southport/Oak Island area is the ideal place to spend your 4th of July family vacation. It is home to the largest 4th of July Festival in North Carolina, complete with arts and crafts, street dancing, a parade, and a fireworks display.
Oak Island is just one of the many pristine beaches of Southeastern North Carolina, which is ranked among the top 12 vacation spots in North America. The clear warm water averages in the low 80’s throughout the summer months, making it an ideal location in which to learn the sport of surfing.
