Professional Surf Instructors
Rick Civelli
Surf Camp Founder / Director
As a kid, Rick Civelli spent his summers exploring estuaries, claming, fishing, and of course surfing. Without realizing it, his appreciation for environmental conservation was ingrained before his teens. He graduated from UNC-Wilmington with his Bachelors in Environmental Studies. During college and after graduation he worked as a marine science educator at the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher. For three years he developed and facilitated programs while teaching thousands of adults and children about the wonders of our coastal ecosystems.
To broaden his professional development he later worked as a permit and enforcement officer for the North Carolina Division of Coastal Management. Taking a different approach to environmental conservation, he reviewed and permitted coastal development projects, and issued fines for remediation of impacted coastal resources. Rick sits on the Board of Directors for the Society of Masonboro Island and is a member of the Geological Society of America, the Surfrider Foundation, the Estuarine Research Federation, and the NC Aquarium Society. He is currently finishing his Masters Degree in Coastal Geology from UNC-Wilmington's Center for Marine Science where he is studying coastal processes.
In the winter of 1995, Rick developed an educational learn to surf program for our local aquarium which he called "Surf's Up". Since then he has taught thousands of students of all ages the sport of surfing while enlightening them of the wonders of our coastal environment.
His travels have brought him to surf and study coastal processes and habitats all over the world. He has explored coral reefs in Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Anegada, Antigua, Bermuda, Jost Van Dyke, St Lucia, St Thomas, St John, and St Martin. He has swam with sea turtles in, Tortola, Baja Mexico, Barbados, and Costa Rica, sharks in Looe Key national marine sanctuary, sting rays in the Bahamas, and dolphins off Key West Florida. He has surfed up and down the east coast from Nantucket to Block Island to Cape Hatteras to Sebastian inlet. He has also caught many epic swells on the West coast from Ocean Beach to Morro Bay to Tourmaline San Diego. During the winter of 2002 Rick ventured to the North Shore of Oahu, where he visited famous surf breaks including Waimea Bay, Pipeline, Sunset and Sandy Beach. He was also lucky enough to see a huge swell hit with 30' to 60' faces!
With his love for surfing and respect for the ocean and it's resources, Rick has developed this unparalleled fun experience known as "Surf Camp".
Jen Civelli
Surf Camp Co Founder
Jen Civelli, has spent years learning how to surf, accelerate her surfing ability, and environmentally taking care of our oceanic resources. Currently, Jen is a professor of chemistry at Cape Fear Community College, located in Wilmington, North Carolina. Jen followed surfing to graduate school in San Diego, where she received her Master's degree in Chemistry from San Diego State University. While working on her degree, she also took surfing lessons through the University. Jen attributes her basic surfing skills to the experienced surf instructors that taught the surfing lessons. While living in San Diego, Jen surfed places like Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, Blacks, Scripps, Trestles, but her favorite break was the Trails in San Onofre State Park.
Jen loves to travel, and has visited Puerto Rico, Antigua, St Lucia, St Thomas, St John, St Martin, Barbados, Los Cabos Mexico, and the Bahamas. She also loves to visit Hawaii, where she always has a blast surfing the long, fun waves of the South Shore. She has been teaching at the college level for the past seven years. Her extra time is spent enjoying the ocean and the beauty it brings. She loves living in North Carolina because of the warm, crystal clear water that makes surfing that much more fun. Jen's favorite thing to do is pack up the Toyota, 4-wheel out on Carolina Beach, and find her own private surf break!!!!
With getting married to Surf Camp founder Rick Civelli in May of 2004, she is assured a lifelong adventure in surf travel, and exploration.
Steven Still
Director of Overnight Programs
Steven Still was born and raised along the coast of South Eastern North Carolina. Spending time around the ocean is the greatest environment for a child to be brought up in as early introduction to the ocean exemplified the opportunities and experiences that coastal areas could provide. He soon recognized the privileges of this lifestyle through surfing, fishing, diving, snorkeling, sailing, and exploring the ocean and surrounding sounds and marshes.
At sixteen he spent a month in Costa Rica surfing and working in a small village grocery market and learned through total immersion the values and humbleness of a non-materialistic lifestyle. From these experiences he decided to learn more about the world be seeking a degree in geography from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Undergraduate studies lead him to San Salvador Island in the Bahamas to study spatial variability in precipitation on a small-scale island climate. While enrolled he spent frequent seasonal trips back to Costa Rica. Although his studies only sparked his interest in different cultures he decided travel was the only way to fully appreciate different societies, traditions, and ways of life. With his fueled thirst for travel, he has surfed and explored in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Central America during a yearlong world travel expedition.
For the past ten years, Steven has worked in Ocean Rescue Operations for the town of Wrightsville Beach, and five of the ten years he has been Captain of Ocean Rescue Operations Management. Through the years he has provided countless rescue services in a variety of different situations that happen in a coastal environment. Along with providing rescue, medical and law enforcement services, he also worked with town management and mutual-aid agencies to set a direction for accelerated growth of the ocean rescue technicians. Steven also developed the town’s first lifeguard competition team to enhance the town’s reputation and develop the squad into a nationally recognized department.
His experiences as an ocean rescue professional along with his training as an emergency medical technician coupled with his local knowledge, leadership skills and abilities, make Steven a great contribution to Surf Camp.

Dave
Ocean Rescue Director
Instructor for US Governmental Agencies
In 1978 Dave started his lifesaving career in South Florida. Prior to coming to Southeastern NC, he has been honing his skills in the waters known as the "Graveyard of the Atlantic".
"The sea is unique for the Outer Banks, producing waves and currents that will challenge the most seasoned waterman / woman while making a rescue. The waters off the coast of the Outer Banks of North Carolina, are very dynamic with conditions changing not each day but by the hour and minute. You only have to read the stories of the Lifesavers stationed in the late 1800's to understand the perilous waters off the coast." Dave stated.
Along with his Ocean Rescue duties in the Outer Banks, Dave was an instructor for the United States Coast Guard Helicopter Rescue Swimmers along with training the United States Secret Service water rescue division in surf zone awareness and rescue within the impact zone. He has continued that relationship establishing the same professional guidance with the Coast Guard in the area and is developing a new program to present the United States Secret Service water rescue division who internally call themselves W.A.L.R.U.S.S.S. meaning, Water Air Land Rescue United States Secret Service.
The training that is delivered to the Ocean Rescue lifesavers under his guidance is to the highest of standards as established by the the most recognized lifesaving association in the United States. Other responsibilities he accepts with known dangers fall within the emergency services division of the Fire Department, where he is a trained professional firefighter and experienced EMT. When asked how he felt about his duties he said with a laugh and a shrug of his shoulders "I guess I'm a one stop rescue shop".
With his experience in Ocean Rescue, Dave is a member of the Rip Current Awareness Strategies Team (RCAST). Where the best in the field from National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration's National Weather Service (www.ripcurrents.noaa.gov) and National Sea Grant (www.seagrant.noaa.gov ) are developing a multi-agency outreach program. This vision in which Surf Camp is a major part of, is to strive toward the elimination of Rip Current fatalities through education.
"Too many people die needlessly when they visit the beach. Rip currents can be killers. It is estimated that the annual number of deaths due to rip currents on our nation's beaches exceeds 100. Rip currents account for over 80% of rescues performed by surf beach lifeguards". Dave said.
When asked why he accepted his role as a consultant for Surf Camp, …… "What Surf Camp brings, is the professionalism that any individual should require when learning a new skill, like Rick says, "Learn the Right Way", The only way to achieve this is to learn from a trained professional in that area of expertise. I know I want that when I look for advancing my skill level!"…….. Dave continues, " It also is an excellent opportunity to educate and inform those on Rip Current awareness and other related water hazards, which is the mission of RCAST".
"Dave is as professional as it gets, and we are very fortunate to have him as part of our training team", says Rick. It can also be arranged for Dave to be present for any Ocean Rescue concerns or peace of mind safety you may have on your vacation or during any program that Surf Camp facilitates. Please contact us on his availability and to get in touch with him.
*Dave's last name and Ocean Rescue Division of the Municipality he works for is intentionally left off, due to the inability to endorse a business as a town employee. Dave has done this as a private individual who works exclusively within the emergency service system. He has not received any compensation for endorsement.

He is currently a senior at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where he is double majoring in chemistry and biology with a premedical concentration.
He plans to graduate with honors in both fields and then aspires to attend medical school and become an outstanding surgeon. Andy loves to surf the many beaches of Southeastern NC. You never know where you will find him in the water. Whether it is knee high or two feet overhead Andy may be anywhere from Wrightsville Beach to Kure Beach to Holden Beach. His favorite break, however, is in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, for it was there where he got in his first barrel at the age of 10 while riding on a body board. Fueled by the "stoke" of riding in a barrel, he made the decision to one day learn how to surf. Andy's love for the ocean is evident in his excitement for sharing in the joy that surfing has given him in his life.

Brad
Surfing Instructor
Marine Science Educator
While growing up on the Chesapeake Bay near Annapolis, Maryland, Brad developed a passion for the water at an early age. His summers were spent water skiing, crabbing, fishing, and surfing. These interests brought him to the University of Delaware where Brad majored in Biology and Psychology. Following graduation, Brad worked in a genomic lab, but quickly felt the call of the ocean, and he took an internship in the Florida Keys where he was able to work as a marine ecology technician.
Although he enjoyed living close to coral reefs, mangroves, and sea grasses, Brad took an opportunity to advance his education by enrolling as a graduate student at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. While studying the neurophysiology of blue crabs at UNCW, Brad worked as a teaching assistant for the university, an instructor for several environmental education programs, and in the lab as a coral reef ecologist. Living just behind Masonboro Island gave Brad plenty of time to surf empty breaks each day. Following graduate school, Brad took a job as the Marine Conservation Program Manager for the Nature Conservancy in the Florida Keys. Here, Brad refined his understanding of tropical marine systems and developed a strong conservation ethic.
Christie
Camp Counselor
Surfing Instructor
Christie has loved the ocean and the outdoors for as long as she can remember. She has deep roots in the action sports industry, she has been snowboarding in the mountains of PA since she was a young teen, and skateboarding since the age of nine. Christie first fell in love with the sport of surfing when her mom made a bet with her, and she won the chance to go on a weeklong trip to California and take some surfing lessons. Her mom said that if she got an A on her science and math classes, she could go. Christie worked very hard at her studies because she knew this would open up a whole new experience and chance to explore the sport of surfing. After taking a weeks worth of surfing lessons, she knew that surfing was her newfound love (sorry guys). It gives her a chance to experience the ocean and beaches in a whole new way. She is currently enrolled at the University of South Carolina at Conway and is pursuing a degree in Marine Science. She simply loves the sand, beach, ocean, and sun so much that she couldn't imagine spending her college year anywhere but right on the beach.
Harris
Camp Counselor
Jr. Surfing Instructor
Surfing has been in Harris’ family for over thirty years. Ever since his dad taught him to ride waves as a young teen he has been hooked. Harris takes advantage of his proximity to the ocean as a first year student at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. If the surf’s up, you can bet he is on it! Harris likes to catch waves anyway he can, but he says his true passion is long boarding off the waters of Wrightsville Beach.
Harris first got involved with Surf Camp last summer as an advanced camper at their Teen Hawaii Adventure Camp. From that moment he knew he wanted to be a surf instructor and work for this great organization. As a veteran lifeguard, working with children and keeping them safe is second nature to him. When Harris is not surfing he is honing his skills as a martial artist. He began teaching kids classes several years ago at a karate school and uses these teaching and communication skills working with clients at Surf Camp.

Advanced Instruction Coach
Joe
Surfing Instructor
Justin
Day Camp Director
Surfing Instructor Trainer
Justin has been hooked on boardsports since the third grade. It
all started with his dog’s eagerness to pull him around the block everyday
after school on an old plastic banana skateboard. He got his first real
skateboard in the sixth grade and bought a surf board (without a fin) at a
garage sale in the 8th grade for 5 bucks. Since then, board sports have
consumed his life. His passion for surfing and the natural environment
which surrounds it sent him to UNCW where he earned his bachelors in
Environmental Sciences in 1994 with a lot of peripheral credits in
philosophy. Upon graduation he moved back to his home town to work for the
oldest privately owned and operated shellfish hatchery in the world and
continued to session his hometown ramps and waves until, on a whim, he spent
a winter in Vermont surfing the frozen wave. One winter turned into 10 and
he now has a home in Stowe, VT where he spends his winters teaching
snowboarding to novice and advanced riders, coaching USASA circuit riders,
and as a member of the Education Staff for the American Association of
Snowboarding Instructors (AASI) helping to train the east coast in the
national standards of snowboard instruction. All that time Justin continued
to chase surf whenever a swell hit.
Pitt, as his friends know him, has sessioned ramps, swell, and mountains all
over North America, Australia, Europe, and the Caribbean. He has been
featured in local newspapers, and last winter season had a weekly spot giving the snowboard
tip of the week on RSN’s “Must Ski TV”. Father of two young children and
dedicated husband, Pitt gets his highest high from what he calls OPF, Other
People’s Fun. In one way or another, throughout his whole life Pitt has
been dedicated to the ideal that a person should leave the world a better
place than it was before he/she arrived, and has made a career and life out
of showing people a good time. For Pitt, life has been a long series of
epic sessions with good friends and family
He currently is eagerly anticipating the return of winter by hiking,
splitting wood, and converting his F-350 to run on vegetable oil. Soon enough, this Spring Pitt will once again return to the warm waters of Wrightsville Beach as one of our lead surf instructor trainers and camp directors.
